Ireland’s financial crash from prosperity has hit everyone very hard indeed, but none are suffering more than the horses, and those involved with them. A major part of Ireland’s economy has always been the horse industry, with high prices commanded for the cream of the bloodstock from the racing world.
This link about TOM HOGAN tells of a racehorse trainer in Ireland who has seen his...

A new law brought into force on the 11th of March 2011, is detailed in this LINK
It seems to have come about as a result of a case brought by the Farriers association against barefoot trimmers.
Basically it lists and clarifies who, legally, (who isn’t a vet) can perform procedures on animals. Only in the case of first aid or contagious disease can anyone not qualified legitimately do...

Earlier this year we were asked to find adoption homes for two pure-bred Arab mares, Milly and Ellie.
Due to exceptionally sad circumstances, their owner was having to move back to the UK and could not take the girls with her. Having owned Milly since a foal, she was grief-stricken at the idea of having to part with her. Her pain was heart-wrenching, and we tried to support her as much as...

A few words from our Guardians…..
Manon & Rowan have been with us for nearly 2 weeks and are already part of the family and settling in nicely. Their confidence grows daily and they are starting to enjoy the daily routine of feeding, grooming, feet, etc. and can be led on a halter to their field. After being kept separate from our 3 donkeys(although they could talk over a fence...

We have seen in the news recently several cases of Equine Influenza, these seem to be centred around the Paris area and in training yards.
Equine Flu is extremely contagious and so it’s useful to be aware of the warning signs, just in case. Have a read of our report we blogged about last year when there was a large outbreak of the disease in...

Yesterday we were out on the road taking Manon and her gorgeous foal Rowan to their new adoptive family in the Charente. Manon was rescued by one of our supporters last year and came into ERF hands recently so that we could safeguard her and her foals future for the rest of their lives.
Manon was pregnant with her eighth foal, all of which were being bred for the meat trade, when she was taken to...

Horsemeat has already been figuring in the French news this year, with opinions divided about production and consumerism between the separate sections of the food chain. There are some real concerns about the market changes affecting the numbers of the indigenous, local French breeds whose continued survival has latterly depended upon their value as a meat animal. Once prized for their meat...

Milly and Ellie are two beautiful older (17yo and 18yo) Arabian mares who are urgently seeking a new home due to a desperately sad change of circumstance.
Milly, the grey, has been with her owner all her life In her younger days she won at top level, showing in hand and under saddle, and was latterly a brood mare.
Ellie joined Milly a couple of years ago, having served her time as a...

Grace has returned to the ERF fold after her previous guardians have had to return to the UK. We are now looking for a permanent guardian who can bring her on and give her a secure future.
Grace was born whilst her mum was with ERF and spent her first few months in our care. Sunrise was rehomed when the mushroom farm that she provided manure for closed down. She had a foal at foot and was in foal...

Yesterday we said goodbye to ERF donkeys Wilbur & Piona as they headed off to their new Guardians, Carolyn and Eddie, to live in the Gers.
When their previous Guardians found that they had to relocate with their work, they had to make the very sad decision that they couldn’t take the donkeys with them and so had to hand Wilbur and Piona back to ERF.
We are very happy and grateful that...

The ugly are those to whom horses are a commodity and who seem to have forgotten these animals are sentient beings. The most culpable in the chain are some of the dealers and transporters, and unfortunately we witnessed abuse from nationalities across the board.
One of the Dutch dealers, who had been buying and selling all day, was riding a cremello Iberian type round bareback in a headcollar...

We visited the October horse market at Maurs this week, one of the major fairs for the sale of animals into the meat trade.
Vehicles from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and Holland as well as all regions of France were evident. We were there early to watch the unloading of well over a thousand equines – there is a quite unbelievable disparity in the transportation used. Big tractors towing...

Equine Infectious Anaemia, otherwise known as Swamp Fever, is sadly back in the news again with confirmed cases in France and the UK.
Within the past month in France, 2 horses have been destroyed following positive tests – one in Sarthe and the other in the Gironde, whilst another 44 are being treated as susceptible.
