Last Saturday was a chance for horse lovers in the La Souterraine and surrounding areas to get together and watch Adam Sheresdan use his natural horsemanship techniques on a variety of different horses throughout the day. We took along Zurito (a horse rescued by Trina before ERF was formed) for Adam to use who, was impeccably behaved all day .
It is always interesting to see different Natural...

Some of you will have already had your first crop of hay made this year before the rain came. In France hay can be made slightly earlier from the UK, from about mid May depending on what part of France you live in, with some people managing to get a second cut later in the summer.
Here is a useful site explaining the hay making process and also some info on haylage here.
If you are wondering...

Approximately 500€ was raised from the raffle and donations from the generous stall holders, raffle prize donators and members of the public who attended. Thank you to everyone who turned up and supported this event, we hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did! It was nice to meet so...

In June last year, ERF rescued 3 female donkeys from a yard in dept 24 – Lena, Belle and Nanette. We knew there was a possibility that any of them could be pregnant as they had been in with entires. Well this week Lena, who lives with Belle in the Vienne, gave birth to a beautiful healthy male foal. Lena’s guardian Jane, who has named the new foal Vinnie, arrived at the field just...

As we think of booking our holidays to far away places, or maybe even a break away closer to home here in Europe, please spare a thought for the equine workers in the tourist trade and help to prevent their suffering.
The Brooke charity are urging holiday makers to be responsible tourists and follow the ‘Happy Holiday Horses code‘.
Obviously, in some countries animals are an...

Whilst we are all looking forward to the long summer days this year, spare a thought for our equine friends who may not have quite so much to look forward to. Summer brings with it some unpleasant nasties, one in particular is flies…and a dangerous place for them to linger is around the equines delicate eye area. It can be quite distressing for some horses, who toss their heads about and...

Last month we reported about the outbreak of Equine Infectious Anaemia in the Vars region of France – see here.
Sadly, 11 horses who tested positive to EIA have now been euthanased. Read report here.

Equine Rescue France is warning UK horse-lovers of the pitfalls of ‘rescuing’ French horses through so-called ‘French rescue’ websites. Purchasers are sought through emotional pleas made on these sites, claiming that the horses are in imminent danger of being transported on a horrendous journey to the Italian slaughterhouses and can only be saved by substantial donations...

Today ERF placed Maddy, Poppy (Maddys foal) and Elly (Maddys sister), with their new adoptive family Tracie and Dave and their 3 beautiful horses.
After a little encouragement, all 3 donkeys were loaded and heading off to their new home in the Haute Vienne countryside. Maddy and Elly are sisters of Asal that we re-homed last Sunday. We are very grateful that Tracie and Dave decided to offer all 3...

Asal and Boris have been introduced into the same field…
I think they are going to become best of friends now!
It’s very important for donkeys to have company and they build firm pair bonds, which is why ERF only rehomes single donkeys where there is already a donkey, or at the very least another horse/pony.
Read some interesting facts on donkey behaviour here...

A few weeks ago we were contacted by a lovely Dutch couple who were looking for a friend for their lonely donkey, Boris. We think we found the perfect match for him in Asal, a 4 year old donkey gelding of a similar breed and size to Boris. Asal’s owner had approached ERF last year to find loving homes for some of his donkeys, he wanted to ensure their future would be secure throughout their...
