The bond between a soldier & his horse

On this date of November 11th whilst we are remembering the courage of the 20 million men and women who gave their lives during the war, let us remember the animals who served, suffered and died also.

The British, Commonwealth and Allied forces enlisted many millions of animals to serve and often die alongside their armies. These animals were chosen for a variety of their natural instincts and vast numbers were killed, often suffering agonising deaths from wounds, starvation, thirst, exhaustion, disease and exposure.                                                                  
A staggering eight million horses and countless mules and donkeys died in the First World War.

During the ceremonies this week, wreaths were laid at the Animals in War Memorial in London. Please take a look at some of the moving war stories on their website and how this monument came to be.
