What do I register my equine as?
Posted by on Jul 31, 2009 in Association News, General News, Legislation | 9 commentsRegistering different breeds of horses, ponies and donkeys in France can sometimes be a little daunting to say the least!
If we break things down you have a) equines born within France or b) equines imported to France
If your equine was born within France then you need to determine if he is eligible to be included in one of the studbooks the Haras Nationaux holds, or, if he is of unknown breeding what category he will fall into. Even if you have no idea of the parentage, he will still need to be microchipped and registered with the Haras Nationaux. Here are the breeds recognised with the Haras Nationaux, there are 4 different types of classification:
a) Chevaux de sang
• Stud-book français du cheval de Pur-Sang (Thoroughbred)

If your horse already holds a breed passport in another country, then you will still need to have them registered with the Haras Nationaux. You will not lose your horses original passport, it will merely be over-stamped by the SIRE (Haras Nationaux) giving them a SIRE number. You will more than likely have to have another signalement (sketch) done over here by a French vet. This simply gets stapled into the original passport.
If your horse is a cross bred with some breed history then he may come under a different category. You can read all about cross breeds in France on the Haras Nationaux site here.
Horses that are of unknown breeding, or a breed not recognised by the Haras Nationaux will be registered under one of the ONC groups (i.e for donkey, heavy horse etc).
If you intend to compete or breed from your horse in France you must make sure that when you register him, that he is on the correct register to do so.
There is some more info on equine Passports on the ERF website here.
i have a rescued french trotter who is now resident in scotland. i have since found out she is in foal and it is looking like when she was in france, she has good breeding would i have to register the foal with the french passport system
Hi Claire,
If you do not have a covering certificate for your mare,as as she is now resident in the UK, you could register the foal with a UK passport issuing office to get a basic ID passport.
Hiya,
Was having a little read of your posts.
I too have recently rescued a french trotter gelding – I’ve currently got him registered with the uk passport agency.
I am really interested in tracing his past, but as I have no previous papers, I’m not sure where to start!
Has anyone managed to do this before?
If anyone could offer some tips or experiences I would be really grateful!
Thanks,
Emily
Hi Emily,
We’ll try and help you if we can.You say you rescued your Trotter, was it through a website or privately through a racing yard in France?
As your horse is a French Trotter he would more than likely be registered with the Haras Nationaux. Do you know why he didn’t come with a French Passport, and on what paperwork did you get him into the UK?
Has the UK Passport that you got for him got his French microchip number on it, or did he not have a microchip when you bought him?
Hi
I have recently been given an ex-hurdler racer from france. He was rescued by a Lady who has now given him to me but i have no papers and no passport for him and no microchip. I have found out his sire and dam and birth date via the arqana website. He is a thoroughbred and I know that Robert Collet owned him at one point in time but how do i go about finding his passport and registering him in my name ?
I spoke to weatherbys about getting him a passport but as far as they are concerned he hasnt been imported and is still living in france…
Im very confused as to what to do next please help me
Thanks Jacque Roose
Hi i have recently had my ‘trotter’ scanned for a microchip from which a foreign, french number appeared. This is the only information i have on her, no passport or breeding or anything. Is there anyway i can get her breeding or a french passport from her microchip number? thanks
Hi,
We had a similar question raised recently whereby the horse had a microchip only. The only way that we know of is to contact the Haras Nationaux who hold the register for all equines in France. They may be able to help but duplicate passports are not cheap from them. Have you any idea what her name over here would have been?
If it is a French microchip it will begin with 250.
Have you any background on your horse at all, do you know how she came to be in the UK?
If she is a French Trotter then she would certainly be registered over here and her Passport should of then accompanied her to the UK.
Hi I am trying to trace my Horse’s history too, but not getting far, she came over from france in March 2008 and was microchipped, on her microchip forms we have the name of the vet who chipped her and the area she came from saint jean le vieux and thats it, ive tried to find info online and I come to a dead end.
Ive emailed the haras nationaux and have emailed the rescue site she came from to see if they are still in touch with the people she came from, finding it all very difficult and frustrating.
any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Hi Samantha,
Can you firstly tell me if you have a French Passport for your horse or do you just have the pink A4 sheet?
What information are you trying to find out and do you know what breed she is?
