Infectious equine disease alert in France
Posted by on Apr 12, 2009 in Donkeys, General News, Horses, Welfare | 0 commentsA horse has tested positive for Equine Infectious Anaemia (Anémie infectieuse équine) following a Coggins test in dept. 83, Var.
The disease, spread by biting insects is often fatal in equines.
The equine that tested positive has now been euthanized. All equines in the immediate area have been quarantined, including the equines of Zavatta circus that are in the area. Any equine may be tested and subsequently euthanized, as AIE is an MRC (maladies réputées contagieuses).
Movement of horses in the area has been stopped and individuals are advised not to take their horses off their property.
Hopefully the regulations in place will ensure that this is an isolated incidence.
